The american college of nurse midwives acnm is the professional association that represents certified nurse midwives cnms and certified midwives cms in the united states with roots dating to 1929 acnm sets the standard for excellence in midwifery education and practice in the united states and strengthens the capacity of midwives in developing countries. Midwifery education programs leading to the cnm and cm credentials involve graduate education most programs require a bachelors degree for entry but some will accept registered nurses rns without a bachelors degree providing a bridge program to a bachelor of science in nursing bsn prior to the midwifery portion of the program. A certified nurse midwife cnm is a person who has dual education as a registered nurse as well as in midwifery and womens health cnms are certified by american midwifery certification board amcb cnms focus especially on care of women and their families during pregnancy birth and the postpartum period. The american academy of family physicians aafp opposed nurse midwifery and issued formal statements to that effect in 1980 1990 and 1993 aafp stated the belief that all nurse midwives should work non independently and that all payments should go through the physician
